No wonder there is a for lease sign out front now.
I cant say much good about this place. I ate their breakfast buffet twice while I was staying at the motel in April.
The food quality was poor and the buffet was poorly stocked. Had to wait about 20-25 minutes for them to stock the bacon. The breakfast sausage also poor quality.
The management there thinks they actually run a good establishment there. Two visits with same poor results make me believe this isnt an isolated incident and quality is consistently poor.
I have never seen or tasted such bland and to be honest vile food in my life…
My friend and I left two full plates … And went to sandy bottoms instead…
And to add insult to injury…. my friend ordered apple juice and orange juice
Came instead … Which tasted like washing up liquid … Never again
Will I eat there…
Where is the seasonings?? At least they could be put on the side. Salad bar was OK but just lettuce and spinach==plus great condiments. Beef soup was totally soupy with no body. They were out fo Gumbo soup. Service was great.
This is the second time I have eaten lunch at Island Buffet. The first time I went in at 130 pm on Sunday, and there wasn’t much to pick from. There was very little soup, and the dessert station was practically empty. It was late in the lunch time, but some food should have been replinished. The one bright spot was the ladies taking care of the tables. They were very nice. On Wednesday May 25, with 9 friends I again went for lunch, and the service again was excellent. The food was hardly average , not tasty at all (bland) Quanity is not I want. Quality is not what I got.I will try breakfast in the future, but not lunch.
For the price, the food was fairly good. What it lacked was seasoning, as with most restaurants, these day. Bring your own spices: hot mustard, crazy salt, hot pepper flakes, etc.
Unlike the previous comments, I found a soup label for each of the 4 soups. I found plenty of food, including fresh salad selections, meat selections, deserts, vegetables. Although, the cooked vegetables were overcooked, e.g., they were soft and also, they were flavorless — unseasoned after boiling.
The staff happily fell over themselves tending to us 10 very talkative men. They go tipped handsomly, I think.
Would I take my wife or good out-of-town friends there for a noon or evening meal? Probably not.
Corrections and an addition of my previous submission: For the price, the food was fairly good. What it lacked was seasoning, as with most restaurants, these days. Bring your own spices: hot mustard, crazy salt, hot pepper flakes, etc.
Unlike the previous comments, I found a soup ladle for each of the 4 soups. One friend, a German born, found the Hungarian stew sweet instead of spicy hot, as he said it should be. I found plenty of food, including fresh salad selections, meat selections, deserts, vegetables. Although, the cooked vegetables were overcooked, e.g., they were soft and also, they were flavorless — unseasoned after boiling.

today is mother’s day. i am a vegetarian, so i was very please with the salad bar and the fresh vegetables. but we don’t eat across the street because it is out of our price range, but today at the island buffet we paid 48.00 for 3 and it said seafood and more dinners. idid not see any seafood, but this price was crazy. i quess that’s why they ask that you pay first. we will not be back. we could have eaten across the street for the same amount of money.. btw
service was great.
My wife and I took a trip to Fernandina Beach (we are locals) today and decided to stop at the Island Buffet for lunch. We had eaten there in the past when it was a Shoney’s…..We were shocked…. it has seriously gone downhill since our last visit there. The buffet was nearly empty, there was little to choose from. The chicken was good and the rest was atrocious. The Mexican food was disgusting! Regarding the food overall, it was terrible…. and expensive. For the same price (with tip went spent over $30.00 for the both of us) we could have had a decent lunch across the street at Cedar River Seafood or eaten at Dairy Queen and kept a vast amount of our money….The waitress was wonderful and helpful, though we honestly felt sorry for all of the staff due to the obvious incompetence of the current owners….I would surely like to see the owner of this “Island Buffet” in person and give him a piece of my mind….we will not return!
My husband and I went there to eat lunch today and were shocked…. it has gone downhill in the last few months. The buffet was 1/2 empty, -literally- there was very little food to choose from. The chicken was good, salad bar was decent, soups were terrible, and the rest was atrocious. The “mexican” food was nasty and even the veggies were tasteless. Foodwise it was terrible…. and expensive. For the same price (about $25.00 for 2) we could have had a decent lunch across the street at Cedar River Seafood.
Our waitress was wonderful, the other waitresses did a great job and I honestly felt sorry for them all.
What a shame. It used to be a nice, small buffet with a predictable range of “comfort food”. Now it is just a waste of space and money. We won’t return.
I was there 5/4/11 I was very displeased with the food and to top it off the coffee how hard is it to screw up coffee it must of been there a few days it was lunch time,I looked around and there was a few tables with older folks the placed smelled just like shoonys did before they closed this place will be next, I will say the wait staff did try I heard one waitress try and get the customer to say it was good food NOT salad bar was not fresh what a shame and waste.
Had dinner there last night. The atmosphere was good as was the waitstaff. Everyone was very nice. The chicken and fish on the buffet was really good also. However, it goes downhill quickly from there. They offer four soups but there was only one ladle for the four. The salad bar took up half the buffet, with salad on each side of the U shaped buffet. While the selection was ample, the kitchen staff had a hard time keeping it stocked. The selection of salad dressings were few. In fact, the kitchen staff had a difficult time keeping the entire buffet stocked. I overheard one woman stating there was no food. The vegetables and the dessert bar were bland at best. There was no butter for the rolls. With a lettle tweeking this place could be a really good buffet. Although this place has been open for a while, it still seems like a soft opening.
